As the non-knitting half of Lost City Knits, our yarn, publishing, and design business, I spend a lot of time around knitters. For years I’ve taken photos of people on vendor floors with a simple flash that brings out their faces and the garments they’ve made.
I wanted this project to be different. By removing faces, bodies, garments, and other ways we present ourselves to others, and just leaving hands and a work in progress, I hope to show that people are more similar than they are different.
Yet there are differences. Jewelry, tattoos, nail polish, watches, and skin care speak, perhaps, to a socio-economic status. So does yarn quality.
There is a difference in talent, too. Some projects are difficult lace, while others are simple scarves.
But what comes through is the common desire to tie things into elaborate knots, and all the myriad ways people have devised to do so.
